About the Swiss Gold 20 Francs Helvetia

The Vreneli is one of the smallest, most collectible ways to hold real European gold. Each coin contains 0.1867 troy ounces of gold, alloyed with copper to .900 fine. That fractional size makes it useful if you want to stack gold without committing to a full ounce per piece.

Switzerland minted the 20 Francs Helvetia from 1897 through 1949, with most coins dated in the early 20th century. The obverse shows a young woman, often called Vreneli, with braided hair and an Alpine backdrop. The reverse carries the Swiss shield and the 20 Fr. denomination. The design is by Fritz Ulysse Landry.

The coin shares a weight standard with the French 20 Francs Rooster and the Italian 20 Lire, all part of the Latin Monetary Union. If you already own those, the Vreneli slots in at the same fineness and gold content, just with Swiss iconography.

Because the Vreneli is a historical circulation coin, you will see graded uncirculated examples and ungraded bulk pieces side by side. For pure bullion stacking, ungraded BU or AU examples carry the lowest premium. Numismatic grades like MS65 and above start to track collector demand more than spot.

Liquidity is decent in Europe and steady in the US, though dealer counts run thinner than for modern bullion like the Eagle or Maple. You should expect a small selection of listings on any given day. Check carefully who has stock before you commit.

Vreneli supply is finite. No new coins have been struck since 1949, and the available pool is whatever survived nearly a century of melting, gifting, and stacking. That scarcity gives the coin a small structural premium even in soft markets.
