About the American Gold Buffalo

The American Gold Buffalo, introduced in 2006, was the first 24-karat gold coin ever struck by the U.S. Mint. At .9999 fine, it gave domestic buyers a pure-gold option without leaving the U.S. Mint's product line. Before the Buffalo, if you wanted .9999 fine gold, you bought a Maple Leaf or a Krugerrand alternative. After 2006, you had a domestic equivalent.

Congress authorized the series through the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. The legislation directed the Mint to produce a 24-karat bullion coin to compete on purity with foreign sovereign issues. The Gold Eagle, alloyed at .9167 fine for durability, could not match those purity-conscious buyers. The Buffalo was the answer.

The design is a faithful restoration of James Earle Fraser's 1913 Buffalo Nickel. Native American head on the obverse, American bison on the reverse. The Mint worked from Fraser's original sketches to bring the relief back at one-ounce coin size, so the modern Buffalo reads as a tribute rather than a reinterpretation. It is one of the most distinctly American designs in circulation.

The coin is issued only in the 1 oz format. It carries a $50 legal-tender face value, which is symbolic given the gold content is worth far more. There is no fractional Buffalo bullion program, so if you want smaller increments of pure U.S. Mint gold you are out of luck. You buy the full ounce or you buy something else.

Buffalos are IRA-eligible because they meet the .995 minimum fineness for precious-metals retirement accounts. They tend to carry slightly higher premiums than the Gold Eagle, which reflects both the higher purity and the lower annual mintages. For a long-term hold, that premium is rarely the deciding factor. For a flip, it might be.

If you are choosing between the Buffalo and other 1 oz pure-gold coins, the question is usually purity preference, design preference, and premium. The Buffalo wins on Americana. The Maple Leaf often wins on premium. You can compare them live further down the page.
