About the American Silver Eagle

The American Silver Eagle is the United States' official silver bullion coin. The U.S. Mint launched the series in 1986 under the Liberty Coin Act, and it has been struck without interruption every year since. Each coin contains exactly one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, weighs 31.103 grams, and measures 40.6 mm across.

The obverse carries Adolph A. Weinman's Walking Liberty design, originally created for the U.S. half dollar minted from 1916 to 1947. Many collectors consider it the most beautiful design ever struck on a U.S. coin, and putting it back into circulation on the Silver Eagle gave the modern series instant pedigree.

The reverse was redesigned in 2021. The original heraldic eagle by John Mercanti gave way to a flying eagle by Emily Damstra, marking the series' 35th anniversary. Coins struck before mid-2021 carry the Type 1 reverse. Coins struck from mid-2021 onward carry the Type 2 reverse.

Annual mintages routinely run into the tens of millions, the highest of any government-issued silver bullion coin in production. That volume is why the Silver Eagle is the standard reference coin most U.S. dealers price-anchor against, and why its bid-ask spread on the secondary market is among the tightest in the industry.

Premiums on Silver Eagles tend to run higher than on competing sovereign coins like the Canadian Maple Leaf, the British Britannia, or the Austrian Philharmonic. The reason is straightforward. Silver Eagles are IRA-eligible under U.S. law, they are recognized at every coin shop in the country, and demand consistently outruns the U.S. Mint's authorized-purchaser allocations.

The coin is sold in single tubes of 20 and Monster Boxes of 500. If you are stacking by the ounce and you want the easiest coin to resell later, the Silver Eagle is the default answer.
