About the Peace Silver Dollar
The Peace Silver Dollar was the final U.S. silver dollar minted for general circulation. Production ran from 1921 to 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935, ending a coinage tradition that stretched back to 1794. The design was rushed into production to commemorate the end of World War I, and the reverse carries the inscription "PEACE" beneath a bald eagle perched on a rock.
The obverse Liberty design is the work of Anthony de Francisci, who modeled the figure on his wife Teresa. The high-relief 1921 strike was technically demanding and softened in subsequent years for production efficiency. By 1928, mintages had dropped sharply, and the series went dormant until silver-purchase legislation revived production in 1934 and 1935.
Each Peace Dollar contains 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver. The total coin weighs 26.73 grams of 90% silver, 10% copper, identical in alloy and weight to the Morgan Dollar. That makes the two coins functionally interchangeable for stackers buying by silver weight.
Mintage figures across the series were lower than the Morgan totals, but most dates remain widely available in circulated grades. The 1928 Philadelphia issue is the recognized key date, and high-grade survivors of any year carry meaningful collector premiums above the silver melt value.
For a bullion buyer, the appeal is straightforward. You get a hefty, recognizable U.S. coin with a fixed silver content, and you typically pay only a small premium over melt for cull or circulated rolls. Graded examples and scarce dates are a different market, priced on numismatics rather than weight.
